Meet Chief Woos of the Wet’suwet’en Nation
Chief Woos (pronounced Wass) is house chief of the Grizzly House (C'asyikh), one of the three "houses" of the Gidumt'en Clan in the Wet'suwet'en Nation. The lands of the Wet'suwet'en Nation are located in northern Canada. Chief Woos is a spokesperson, teacher and spiritual advisor. One of his main responsabilities is taking care of the land of the C'asyikh community.
Chief Woos and the other members of the Wet'suwet'en Nation live in and with nature: in the Wet'suwet'en area they hunt, set traps and catch fish. But their way of life and their culture is in danger. The Canadian government gave permission to the company Coastal GasLink to build several gas pipelines on their land. The government did this without consulting the Wet'suwet'en Nation. The Wet'suwet'en fear the pipline will pollute the land and the rivers. They are regularly driven off their own land.
Together with the Wetsu'weten, Amnesty calls for a halt to the construction of the gas pipelines and demands that Canadian authorities drop all charges against members of the indigenous Wet'suwet'en.
